Saying Goodbye

Josh and I were so happy to welcome a little baby into our family this July. We were two very anxious first time parents busily getting things ready, when we were hit with something we were not expecting. About a week ago we got some troublesome, but hopeful news from our doctor that I may have to be on bed rest the last 2 months of my pregnancy. I was not alarmed because it was not something that was going to harm our child, just make me uncomfortable for 2 months. Later on in the week I was at work and had an alarming episode that prompted me to go to the ER. The doctors there told me that everything was fine my baby was healthy and that I was to see my doc the next morning. The next day I walk into my doctor’s office and get some sad news. Our baby was having a hard time. Things were not working out, but she was still hopeful. With hope Josh and I returned home with strict rules to take it easy. About 2 horrible hours later we were back in the hospital where we said goodbye to our little baby. I know everything happens for a reason. Josh and I are going to be great parents someday. We just need to keep faith in our Heavenly Father and know that everything will be ok in the end.

Last night Josh rented the "Memphis Belle." I was a little worried at first because I thought it was going to be sad. Josh assured me that all would be ok. So with his reassurance we began to watch. This story was amazing. I couldn't believe what these men went through. It was a great movie, and true story that I would recommend to everyone!

Last night we got a picture text from Joshs Dad. It was a pic of Laralee giving some very exciting news. I was so happy to find out that Ike and Laralee were having another baby! Yeah! May cant come soon enough! Congrats Ike and Laralee!

Pumpkins and the Maze

Josh and I had the best weekend. Josh planned for us to head to a corn maze and pumpkin picking. When we arrived at the maze we were astonished at how many fun attractions they had. There were slides, hay rides, games, food, pumpkin picking etc. We had a great time. Definitely something we will be doing next year.

At the pumpkin field they were having a discount on pumpkins. All the pumpkins you could carry for $10. Josh and I cleaned up!

While I was in St. George we were able to celebrate my moms 52nd...I mean 25th birthday. For her birthday my cunning siblings and I thought it would be fun to get her a pinata. I went to some rather sketchy parts of El Paso to find these little treasures. It was fun watching her bust them open. We love you mom you don't look a day over 25!

Almay vs. MAC

Since I was 15 I have been an advocate for MAC makeup. I love the stuff. But for some reason the last 2 years of my life MAC and I have been in a love hate relationship. I love the their vibrant colors and fun styles, but my face doesn’t. As much as I wanted to deny it MAC foundation makes my face break out. Sad day right? Wrong! I though I wouldn’t find a foundation that I liked more, but thanks to my sister, I did. Almay Smart Shade is amazing. I was nervous when buying this products, but my sister insured me I would love it. It has great coverage, but is extremely light, unlike MAC foundation. I really like the product and would suggest it for anyone. It only comes in 3 shades, I picked the lightest, but it blends to your skin perfectly! I’m definitely an Almay fan now!

Josh and I have been watching submarine movies lately. these darn movie are so intense. I can feel my blood pressure raising as these movies unfold. I couldn't live on a sub. I feel claustrophobic as I watch them. At the same time I admire anyone that can live and work in these amazing machines. I recommend these movies, but not if you are faint of heart.

The Best Football Appetizer

Football season is here, and I can’t think of a better food to eat during the big opening game than bean dip. This recipe is so easy. This is a definite crowd pleaser that won’t take you all day to make!

Recipe:

First Layer: 1 can refried beans mixed with 1 teaspoon cumin and ¼ teaspoon garlic salt.

Second layer: 1 Avocado mixed with ¼ cup of Mayonnaise and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Third Layer: Regular sour cream

Fourth Layer: Cheese (my favorite layer)

Fifth Layer: Tomatoes, yellow onion, and cilantro

Such a fun dip that screams football! P.S. Way to go BYU Cougs!

Since Josh and I moved to El Paso we have made a good list of things we enjoy about this city. Number one on our list is most definitely our ward. I look forward to church each week to see all of our wonderful friends. It is funny, all the girls in my office were so baffled at how I could have an instant group of friends the second we moved here. I feel so lucky and blessed that we have such a strong ward, who care so much about us. I was lucky enough to receive a calling to work with the young women. I am the Beehive advisor. I love working with these girls each week. They never cease to amaze me! This last week for mutual I taught a lesson on the Strength of Youth and to follow up we made our own Mormon Ads. The girls had such a great time, and just love the way their ads turned out.

As an attempt to get away one last time before Josh starts school we headed west to San Antonio. I had no expectations, since the only "Texas" city I have been to is the city that I live in. I absolutely love San Antonio. If I were going to live in Texas, San Antonio would be the place. Josh and I stayed at a "swanky" hotel called Hotel Valencia, right on the Riverwalk. There were so many cool sights. We were able to walk up a few blocks and see the Alamo. Now I feel a little silly that I didn't know the entire story of what happened at the Alamo. I couldn't believe the story. We have some amazingly brave ancestors. We had a great time, and I cant wait to visit San Antonio again!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I come home stick my nose in the air and say "What is that smell?" I have gone through so many candles trying to find the one I like. Well today was the day! I have found it! I love the way this candle looks and smells. If I could I would by one for every room! Deffinately a great buy! Thank you Anthropologie!

This week Josh takes his last test, which will complete his first year of medical school!!! GO JOSH! I cant believe how fast this year has gone by. The Big Freeze

As many of you know we have had some crazy weather in El Paso over the last 5 days. It started on Wednesday, February 2. We knew that we were supposed to get a cold spell, but nothing prepared us for what we would wake up to. I thought I was back in Provo! It was freezing, there was snow and ice all over the roads. All excited about the fun weather I wake up and get ready for work. Although when I walked through the door I had no idea it what a crazy day it would turn into. I get to work that morning and find that I am the only one there. I listen to the messages and find that many people have already cancelled their appointments due to the weather! As the girls start to arrive I get a message from Melissa, Angela and Licci who are stuck in snow and cant get out. As the first patients arrive we find that we are going to have to cancel the day. There was no way to complete a full day with 3 assistants out. I was so excited it was my first snow day. I have lived in Utah all my life and I never remember having a snow day. I was so happy to get to spend the day with my hubby. When I got home I turned on the news and found that the city was in crisis. Stores are closed, roads are closed, water lines are frozen and they are going to implement rolling blackouts. I could not believe my ears. The day turns to the night and we hear that so many of our friends did not have power. They were freezing in their apartments. We invited many over to stay warm, but they decided to tough it out! I felt so lucky that we had heat and water. After thinking that I jinxed myself. The next day we lost water. We had literally no water, not a drop. For the first day I thought it was like an adventure, but that day rolled into 2, then 3, then 4. Man I was cranky. Luckily Sunday night rolled around and the water was restored! It has been a crazy couple of days. Thank you to all who helped us!

Publishers Clearing House Winner!

This time of year is so magical.

The costumes, the candy, the weather changing there is nothing really like it.

Most of all I was excited for this years {Trunk or Treat}.

I have never been part of one before and I was excited to pass out candy.

The only thing that concerned me was that Josh and I did not have our costumes yet.

We had no idea what we were going to be…until Thursday.

Josh came in and had figured it out.

He had the great idea

of being Ed McMahon and the contest winner of the Publishers Clearing House.

It was a hit.

Josh and I made a big check, I put curlers in my hair (something I have not done in years!) and we headed off to the ward party.

It was a great evening full of fun!!

This last weekend Emily and I were able to throw our wonderful friend, April, a baby shower!! I have never thrown a baby shower before. I was a little nervous, but I had a great friend on my side. Emily did a great job with all the planning, food and fun. She is so fun to work with. I loved throwing a shower and hope I get to do another one soon.

Sunday Walks

This Sunday Josh and I decided to go on a drive through some undiscovered parts of El Paso. As we were driving we saw some amazing houses, with amazing yards. It was so refreshing to drive down by the Rio Grande and see trees, flowers, bushes and grass. Towards the end of our little drive we got out of the car and walk by the river. It was fun to walk and talk with Josh. He is so busy with school and studying that it can be hard to find the time to talk. I love him and love how hard he is working. Unfortunately mosquitoes attacked us at the end of our walk. It makes me laugh to think of us running back to the car to try to escape those horrible bugs. I love Sundays.

BYU I Miss You

Today classes started at BYU without me. There is something about being on the beautiful campus, sitting in a lecture, being with friends in the library till 2:00 in the morning studying and football games that I just miss. BYU was such a great school. It taught me a lot about who I am. Learning has always been part of me. Being a student gave me confidence. I always knew that I could do anything a professor threw at me. Now that I am in the “real” world, with a “real” job I don’t quite feel the same. I found myself sad/happy to think about my little brother who gets to go to school there starting today. I hope he loves it, because I love and miss it.

This summer I was introduced to a real treasure. My aunt/boss/great friend had, what was, my great grandmother’s desk. I love looking at pictures, and seeing things that once belonged to my ancestors. In some ways it makes me feel like I am getting to know who they were. One day I was visiting Natalie when she told me about this desk. This old desk that was just screaming my name. It looked awful. The poor desk was stained all different colors, it was missing pieces, and the back had come off. Well I knew there was something I could do. I took it home where Josh and I went to town. We took off the varnish, re-stained it, added a board to the back and gave it some good old TLC! I It was so fun to work on this project with Josh. Thank you to Sky, Mom and Dad for helping us with it. We could not have done it without you. It now sits in my living room as a constant reminder of where I have come from ☺

Johs’s White Coat Ceremony

Josh was accepted to the Texas Tech Paul L. Foster School of Medicine this fall. I am so excited to start this chapter in our lives. Part of going to medical school is having a white coat ceremony to mark the student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences. Dave and Janet were able to come down for the ceremony. We had a great time celebrating this big milestone!

This is a really late post, so sorry! About a week ago I was swimming with some friends. During one of our many conversations we were talking about apartments. I told them that I loved our apartment and nothing had ever gone wrong…until I got home. That is right I jinxed myself. When I came home there was a waterfall coming out of the ceiling. It was insane. I called the office staff who quickly came to fix the problem. They were able to fix the leak only after 2-3 gallons of water came streaming out of the ceiling. Thank goodness it was only in the bathroom!

I cant believe it, but I am an aunt again today!! Ceri, my older (Fantastic) sister, just had the cutest little baby girl. I was so happy to see pictures of her and to hear that ceri was ok. I am so happy to have her in my life now. I love her so much and cant wait to meet her!!

Greetings From the Lone Star State

So sorry about the lack of posts, life has been crazy. Josh and I have recently moved to the Lone Start State… TEXAS! I have never lived outside of UT, so moving here was a huge step. Josh loves medical school. He is excited to learn and eager to get going. I could not do what he does. You are amazing Josh! I could not get a teaching job (The state of Utah could not talk to the state of Texas fast enough). I decided that instead of teaching I would take any other job that was available. That is how I cam across orthodontic assisting. It is a new experience and I love the girls I work with. I am glad I have a job in a time where good jobs are rare. We are happy and love this new chapter in our lives!

We are officially moving to El Paso Texas. Crazy. I cant believe it is actually happening. SO much has happened the last few weeks. Sorry for the brief summaries.
1) I have 4 more days of teaching! I love my students and I will miss them so much. I will miss the people I work with. I love you Michelle, Joan, Natalie, Diana and everyone else at Sage Creek.
2) Skyler won state again!! Way to go little brother! He is amazing that is all there is to say. He is also graduating as valedictorian from Desert Hills High School. The boy is unstoppable. Way to go Sky.
3) Ceri is pregnant. I am so excited to be an aunt again. The two of them are going to have the cutest curly haired, skinny babies. Love you Ceri. You are an amazing sis!
4) We are moving home for 1 month! I am currently packing…blah!
5) Our friends Doug and Bethany moved to Colorado. We miss them so much and cant wait to see them in June!
6) Josh and I graduated from BYU! 4 years of hard work down and 4 more to go!
7) Josh and I celebrated our second anniversary. I am lucky to be married to such a wonderful guy. I can’t believe it has been 2 fantastic years.

Josh and I are moving to El Paso Texas. Josh was accepted into the Texas Tech Medical School El Paso branch. After a year of worry and stress we finally are in. We are so happy that we have a place to go. I am excited to see him learn about medicine and start to move towards what he really wants to do. Way to go Josh! I am so proud of you!

2nd Anniversary

I can’t believe Josh and I have been married for 2 years. Time flies when you are having fun! This anniversary was so exciting, and full of little “Josh” surprises, as only Josh can do. I woke up on Tuesday and headed to work around 6 am. I knew Josh and I were going to go to dinner that night, but I didn’t know that when I got to work that day I was going to run into the best surprise. Josh had gone the night before and decorated my classroom. How I did not see this coming is beyond me. He even called my Principal/great friend, Natalie, to make sure that if he went to the school that late he wouldn’t get the policeman called on him. He was so thoughtful in how he decorated. He took 25 balloons and hung them around my classroom so that each of my students could have one! They loved it! I love him and his ability to constantly surprise me. It has been the best 2 years!

So much has happened in the last three months. The most exciting thing to happen is the birth of our adorable niece Jerzie. She was born on January 4, 2010. I love being an aunt and josh loves being an uncle. HE keeps saying that Jerzie gets her good looks from him. I cant wait till I can go home and see her again.
For the last year I have been working with 28 fantastic, sometimes frustrating, 3rd graders. I love my job, but it is so hard. Being a teacher is emotionally and physically draining. I cant believe the school year is half way over. I keep asking myself, “What have they learned?” It makes me nervous that they are not learning enough and that I’m not doing my job. I just keep hoping that it is enough. I love those kids and want them all to succeed!
Josh is in his last semester at school. I cant believe we are graduating in April. I am so proud of him and all he is doing. I have never met anyone who can catch on to hard concepts like he can. He constantly amazes me. Josh has still not heard from medical schools but we are still hopeful!

Josh Reber and Scott Morris landed $1,500 each from BYU last year for undergraduate research. They turned their cash into new insights into the health-promoting aspects of strawberries and the prediction of lifespans.

BYU students have until Oct. 30 to apply for some of this year's round of funding.

Last year BYU’s Office of Research and Creative Activities (ORCA) awarded 318 winners. Paired with a faculty mentor, these undergraduate students dive into projects of their own choosing and get their hands dirty in a fashion that most campuses reserve only for grad students.

What makes strawberries so good for you? A BYU undergrad is cracking the code

Josh Reber knows people enjoy strawberries for more than their taste. He used his $1,500 in undergraduate research funding to help find out exactly what makes the berries such a healthy treat.

Reber, a senior from St. George, Utah, majoring in nutritional science, and his faculty mentor Tory Parker zeroed in on flavonoids, plant nutrients that may be beneficial to humans. They looked at why combinations of these particles work better together than separately. This involved meticulously analyzing 30-plus trays with 96 samples each. He injected each with a free radical generator and measured reactions to oxidation.

“It gave me a great appreciation for the dedication it takes to see results,” said Reber, noting the countless hours he spent painstakingly gathering data.

Reber found that while some compounds worked together, and others worked against each other, the overall effect was that combining individual compounds made for a more healthy strawberry. He thinks this information could help make nutritional supplements more effective and lead to more research on related compounds.

Reber and his fellow lab assistant, Brenner Freeman, presented their findings at the Institute of Food Technologists Convention last summer, attended by 13,000 professionals in the field. Reber graduates in April and is interviewing to attend medical school next fall.

For BYU student, statistics is a matter of life and death

Scott Morris is pretty confident he’ll die when he is 79. The BYU student used statistical modeling to predict his own life span from his ancestors’ ages at death.

“That’s 14 years after I plan on retiring — I hope I get to go out with a bang,” he said.

Morris’ work was funded by a grant from BYU’s ORCA office to support undergraduate research. His study grew out of a class project and partnership with Scott Grimshaw, a professor of statistics.

He used data from 99 of his deceased ancestors from all the way back to the 1600s, using their death dates to predict his own life span of 79 years. Morris acknowledges that, at this point, his project is primarily useful for satisfying curiosity, but it could have future applications in the medical and actuarial fields in helping practitioners make informed decisions about clients and patients.

But it took a lot more than just plugging in numbers to figure it out Morris’ morbid fate. He used three common statistical estimators to compare his models to real-life data and then figured out another predictor of his own, based on a combination of other methods.

“It was the worst predictor of them all,” he said. “I realized I could never match the elegance and complexity of these established estimators and was able to take a whole lot of pressure off myself.”

After figuring out which of the statistical models was most accurate for past data, he turned to prediction. Since working on his project as an undergrad, Morris has moved on to a master’s in statistics and plans to pursue a Ph.D.

So I just needed to post and say just how wonderful Josh is. This week has been crazy. I have been trying to get my room ready for next Wednesday (so excited). Josh has been helping me every step of the way, and today he did something so cute. For my first day of school josh bought me a new water bottle (the one I wanted!), a diet coke and a lot of chocolate. This is just what I needed and somehow he knew that. Thanks Josh I love you!

This last weekend Josh and I went to Lake Powell with my family and the Gerths. On the first day Josh was out wakeboarding when the board hit him in the mouth. I couldn’t believe it! It was such a freak accident. I was not on the boat when this happened, but my little brother, Skyler, came running on the beach yelling that Josh was bleeding and needed to go to the ER! So in the boat we went to the Page emergency room. We had to wait 3 1/2 hours to see a doctor. Luckily, our good friend and practically second mother, Julie, came with us and held my hand as I was holding Joshes. My poor dad had to wait at the dock for us to come back. He was so great during this whole ordeal.

Sorry for not blogging in such a long time. The El. Ed. program is really taking up all my time. I am almost done! I am so excited. Time is flying by, pretty soon I will be teaching my cute little 3rd graders. A lot has happened since I have last blogged. Josh and I went camping with our friends Becky and JD. I have never been camping up in American Fork canyon before. I can’t believe we got to stay in such a breath taking place. I highly recommend it. Josh is busy filling out secondary applications for medical school. Applying to medical schools is really nerve wracking. I have had to exercise a lot of faith in knowing that it will all work out. We recently bought a dutch oven. It is so delicious; I could have a dutch oven dinner every night.

The New Aunt and Uncle: This weekend Josh and I went to St. George to visit our family. On fathers day Isaac and Laralee came over to eat dinner at the Rebers and gave us all a big surprise. Dun du dun we are going to be an aunt and uncle! We are so excited. This is the first baby on either side of my family and the first grandbaby for the Rebers. Laralee is due on January 1st. We can’t wait for our little niece or nephew to get here!

Gone Fishing: Josh had the chance to go fishing JD Wilcox style. It was amazing to say the least. JD has set up his bow with a fishing arrow and fishing line that allows you to shoot the fish and pull them in. A little violent, but a great time nonetheless. Josh hit a fish his second try, a huge 9 pound carp. We might be in the market for a bow; if you’ve got one lying around the house, let us know!

Yanni: This past weekend Josh and I received free tickets to see Yanni at Energy Solutions. We were a little nervous about going, but were pleasantly surprised when we got there. Yanni is amazing. I hope everyone gets a chance to go sometime in their life. Everyone’s natural reaction when we told them was a little obscure, usually with a response such as “isn’t he the old Greek guy that plays the pan flute?” usually accompanied by a look of “are your crazy or just stupid?” We loved every minute of the concert. Yanni has added some great singers to his orchestra and they were A-mazing. If you ever get the chance to go to a Yanni concert, GO!

This weekend we went out with our friends Dave and Megan. Dave is doing Teach for America and will be moving to Vegas in one week. We will miss them. Anyways, this Saturday we went over to Dave and Megan’s for a snow cone. When we got there we decided that snow cones were not going to suffice. Dave decided that he had to have cake, so the great cake hunt began. We jumped in the car and starting driving around town trying to find a restaurant with cake. Somehow our great hunt led us to Los Hermanos. We decide that instead of cake we would eat Mexican food. Josh and I have never laughed so hard. We are really going to miss our good friends the Blodgetts.

Time has flown by since our last entry. We have done so much in the last 3 months it is hard to keep track. Josh took the MCAT this month. We are hoping that he did really well, and that his scores will be high enough to get us into a good medical school. Cross your fingers for us. I am almost done with BYU’s fast track for the El. Ed. Program GO ME! The last 8 weeks have been some of the hardest of my life. I can’t believe I am going to start teaching in August. I am going to teach 3rd grade at Sage Creek Elementary!

Last summer my parents bought Josh and I tickets to go see David Cassidy with them in concert. Neither of us knew of him, but had heard of the Partridge family and were prepared for a big show, but it turned a little more drunk then we thought. David Cassidy showed up a either drunk b on drugs or c all of the above. He could not remember the words to his songs or the names of his band members. Worst of all he called up all the little children in the audience and gave them a political speech and complimted a young boy on his being comfortable about his sexuality. If matters weren’t bad enough we were seated on the second row right ehind the president of his fan club who was wearing dress that left little to the imagination. It was a night to remember.

This week it was our 1 year anniversary. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful husband who made our anniversary so special. Josh booked the most amazing bed and breakfast called the Johnson Mill; I highly recommend it. That night Josh and I ate at the Train Burger. I really wanted to eat at the Train Burger in Heber because it is so good, also highly recommended. While we were there the lady taking our order decided to tell us all about her life and her family, she was adorable. At the end she gave us a recipe book. It was so awesome! Lastly, Josh gave me a strand of black pearls, thanks to my wonderful Aunt Mel. He is amazing and I am so lucky to be married to him. I love you Josh!

Cabo and New Years

It has been a long time since I have updated this blog. It is a very long entry so feel free to stop at anytime.

This Christmas has been amazing. Josh and I were able to leave Provo on the 19th just before the big storm, and head down to LA with our families. We were able to go to Cabo this year with both my family and his. It was fun to spend Christmas with both families. While we were in Cabo we were able to visit with the Martinez family. We have known this cute family for several years and it has been fun to watch them build their lives together, and to succeed in all they do.

This is the first Christmas that Josh and I have spent together. It was so fun to wake up in the morning and get to spend that time with him. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful family who care about Josh and I so much.
